⥠They Thought They Had Me Trapped
Â
Sun Life thought they had me cornered.
They denied my accommodations, blocked my return to work, and at the same time told federal court I was âfit to workâ so they wouldnât have to pay disability.
Their goal was clear:
Destabilize me financially.
Break me emotionally.
Keep me too weak to fight back.
But hereâs the ironyâ
their retaliation forced me to get stronger.

đ§đ˝ââď¸ Rebuilding From the Rubble
I wasnât going to starve for Sun Life.
And I wasnât going to starve for my employer.
If they refused to let me work,
and Sun Life refused to pay disability benefits,
then I had only one option:
to rebuild without them.
So I doubled down on my recovery:
Intensive outpatient therapy
Mindfulness and walking
Progressive relaxation
Counseling and self-work
Every tool I could find to steady myselfâI used.
And then something amazing happened.
âď¸ The Comeback They Didnât See Coming
The personal injury firm Iâd worked with before in Dallas called:
âDr. Stephenson, are you available?â
At first, I hesitated.
Then I said, Hell yes, Iâm available.
They had plenty of work for me.
Another group wanted me to do disability evaluations for veterans.
I said, YesâIâd love to help veterans get the benefits they deserve.
Thatâs the work Iâm doing now.
The very outcome Sun Life and my employer were desperate to prevent.
Because their retaliation backfired.
By denying me support and blocking my return,
they pushed me to rebuild without them.
And now Iâm regaining my footing.
đŹ The Privilegeâand the Purpose
Â
I know most people donât have this privilege.
Not every neurologist can pivot into personal injury and veteran disability evaluations.
Certainly not the HR worker, not the nurse, not the everyday employee crushed by the system.
Thatâs why I have to keep fighting.
Not just for meâbut for everyone who canât.
đĽ The Fire They Lit
Â
So yes, Sun Lifeâyou made me.
You thought youâd silence me.
Instead, you lit a fire.
And now Iâm louder than everâ
n federal court,
in regulatory filings,
on social media,
and yesâeven through my pets.
My foster dog Luke gives you side-eye on TikTok,
and heâs not the only one.
I didnât want this role.
I didnât ask to be the Norma Rae of Neurology đŞ.
But here I am.
You put me here.
