End Physician Non-Competes in Virginia’s Underserved Communities

🧠 The Crisis We Can No Longer Ignore

Across Virginia—and across the country—patients are waiting months to see neurologists and other specialists.

In Hampton Roads, I saw this crisis up close.

I watched as non-compete clauses—the very contracts meant to protect corporate interests—ended up blocking patients from care.

When I tried to return to serve my community, I was told I couldn’t.

Not because there wasn’t a need.

Not because I wasn’t qualified.

But because a hospital system said I was legally barred from helping the very patients I once treated.

This isn’t just about one doctor.

It’s about every patient who’s still waiting.

⚕️ Who Is Impacted

When hospitals and corporations use non-competes to restrict where physicians can work, entire communities suffer.

These clauses don’t just limit doctors—they limit access.

Patients wait longer for appointments.

Critical diagnoses are delayed.

Families are forced to drive hours for care that should exist right in their hometowns.

Ending physician non-competes means putting patients first—so care is determined by need, not by a contract.

⚖️ What’s at Stake

This is about more than employment law.

It’s about public health and human dignity.

Every time a neurologist, surgeon, or specialist is told they can’t practice because of a non-compete, patients lose access to lifesaving care.

We can’t fix healthcare shortages if we keep forcing doctors out of the communities that need them most.

🕊️ Why Now

Right now, both the Virginia General Assembly and Congress have the power to act.

As shortages worsen and burnout grows, this is the moment to draw a line and say:

Patients before profits.
Access before enforcement.
Health before contracts.
