If I Were the Sun Life CEO, This Would Have Ended a Long Time Ago

It wouldn’t have taken lawsuits, complaints, and social media campaigns.
It wouldn’t have taken dragging through portals, regulators, and multiple courts.
It wouldn’t have taken TikToks, Medium blogs, LinkedIn posts, and cartoons just to be heard.
And that’s the whole point.

What I Would Have Done
If I were the CEO of Sun Life, this entire ordeal would have ended with a single phone call.
A call to say:“
We’re sorry. We mishandled your claim. We recognize the harm.”
A call to ask:
“What do you need to get better and return to work safely?”
A call to make it right —
quickly, privately, and with dignity.
That is what real leadership looks like.
Real leaders listen.
Real leaders protect the vulnerable.
Real leaders de-escalate instead of inflaming.
What They Did Instead
Sun Life chose a different path.
They chose silence.
They chose denial.
They chose delay.
They weaponized portals.
They blocked communication.
They invested in attorneys instead of resolution.
They turned a claim into a campaign.
They turned a doctor asking for help into a “problem” to manage.
The Irony
Here’s what they still don’t seem to understand:
I told them — over and over — how I process harm.
When you hurt me, I write.
When you silence me, I post.
When you retaliate, I get louder.
Dragging me through portals and onto platforms wasn’t strategy.
It was survival.
And every time they escalated?
They created another story.
Another cartoon.
Another TikTok.
Another blog post.
Another regulatory filing.
Another reason for someone out there to pay attention.
They didn’t shut me down.
They made me.
The Lesson
If I were the Sun Life CEO, I would have recognized that early.
I would have seen the humanity instead of just the liability.
I would have understood that when someone is hurt, the right thing — and the smart thing — is to repair, not retaliate.
I would have done what leaders do:
Apologize.
Make it right.
Move forward.
Because this could have ended a long time ago.
But since they didn’t?
I will keep writing, keep speaking, and keep advocating — not just for myself, but for everyone else they tried to silence.
